Violet and purple: are they the same?

There’s a world of difference between these two colours.

Sir Isaac Newton’s created the Theory of Light, which proved that the colour spectrum was made of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. That’s right: purple isn’t there. You might be surprised to learn that violet is a true colour and is part of the spectrum of light. However, the word purple can be used to describe any shade of colour which comes between red and blue.

While it may not technically be a “colour”, purple can still be a wonderful way to describe all those beautiful luxurious hues that sit between blue and red, like lavender, mauve, mulberry, and orchid. Okay, so Newton may not completely agree, but he might change his mind if he slept in a bedroom decorated in soft shades of soothing lavender...
